The Church and House at Chapel Lane embody
the simple elegance of the South.
Damea Bourne Benton grew up in a home her parents had restored and renovated in Columbia. Her parents have completed a number of home restorations since, as have Damea and her husband, Louis. The desire to revive old buildings and give them new life, coupled with generations of roots in Columbia make Chapel Lane both natural and unique.
The Bournes and Bentons did not set out to open an event space. The most recent home that the Bournes have renovated is the Lampton-Bourne house on Church Street. While driving down the road, Damea’s mom, Betty Bourne, noticed the church building was falling further into decay. She called her daughter and son-in-law and asked them to come look at the building. After seeing the potential inside, Damea asked, “How can we not do something?”
The idea for Chapel Lane began to take shape. Columbia needed a new meeting and event space, and the church building needed a new purpose. The family began planning, but knew they would need more space to make Chapel Lane a viable and flexible venue. When they discovered that the house next door to the church was for sale, the pieces began falling into place.
It was important to the family that the project be done the right way, which meant focusing not only on the aesthetics of the buildings but also the integrity of the renovations. To them, it was just as important to ensure that the buildings were structurally sound and safe for the future while maintaining their history. Anything original to the structures that could be salvaged or restored was used, including light fixtures, flooring, and hardware. While this made the restoration project more challenging, it is also one of Chapel Lane’s greatest strengths. “We don’t have to work to be vintage,” Damea explains. “We are vintage.”
Even in the construction phase of the project, Chapel Lane has already been fulfilling its new mission of bringing people together. The excitement of the community at the restoration of this landmark has been evident from the start. Many members of the community have stopped by to share their stories and memories that took place in the church. Damea Benton wants to ensure that the venue remains accessible so that future generations are able to share the same types of memories of time spent at Chapel Lane.
While Chapel Lane is poised to become one of the most beautiful and intimate wedding venues in South Mississippi, it is the family’s hope that it will be used for many diverse events and gatherings. “We want it used. We don’t want it to sit vacant.” There has been enough vacancy in the church building’s history. It is ready to once again house the life and memories of the community.

History of our Space
Community has been central to the Church at Chapel Lane since its inception as the Church of the Blessed Holy Trinity in 1925. Started as a mission from the Catholic church in Bassfield, the small congregation received much aid from its non-Catholic neighbors in Columbia. Contractor and congregation member S.T. Wilks purchased the lot for the church in 1923 from Maude Dukate, whose family built several of the homes on Church Street, including the House at Chapel Lane. Mr. Wilks donated the land to the congregation and was instrumental in the construction of the church building. The church congregation continued to grow as Holy Trinity Catholic Church, and by the 1970’s it became apparent that a larger building was needed to house it. The original Holy Trinity building then became home to a local club. The Church was also used as a florist and then a used book store, before a residential renovation was planned but never completed. It is our hope and intention that the restoration of the Church and House at Chapel Lane will once again allow Columbia to gather together on Church Street and continue building the legacy of this landmark.
Our Story
We are deeply rooted in the community of Columbia, Mississippi. It is our honor to revitalize and preserve its landmarks and the stories of its people and days gone by. Our greatest dream is to restore these beauties to their original state and allow people to enjoy their classic charm once again. Chapel Lane is much more than a cluster of buildings and outdoor spaces. It is a culture, a place for community, and a backdrop for memorable moments as authentic and unique as the venue itself. Built in 1925, the Church at Chapel Lane was the original home of the Church of the Blessed Holy Trinity, the first Catholic church in Columbia. The land for the church was purchased from Maude Dukate, whose family built several of the houses on Church Street, including the House at Chapel Lane.
The Church and House at Chapel Lane embody the simple elegance of the South. From the original hardwood floors inside to the ancient oak trees standing watch over the property, this is a venue steeped in charm and tradition and waiting to welcome you. After the Holy Trinity Catholic Church relocated in the 1970s, the church building entered its second phase of life, first as a clubhouse and then as a commercial property housing first a florist and then a used book store.
A residential renovation was planned but never completed. As this new phase of life for the Church begins, it is our hope that this restoration will once again allow the people of Columbia to gather together on Church Street and continue building the legacy of this landmark. The Church and House at Chapel Lane are family owned and committed to ensuring that your experience is personal and marked by the Southern hospitality that is so ingrained in our community and values. Our experienced and talented team of professionals is ready to put our creativity to work for you.
